Gods of the New Blood Saga

January 2025 Editor's Choice, BooksShelf.com

The past and present collide, forcing Natharr and the rest of the Rilari to struggle with the consequences of their absence, past choices, and the power of the Usurper’s vizier left unchecked for far too long. The strain proves too much for some, requiring hard decisions to prepare for a dark future racing toward the Guardian of Maarihk, Ellis the Elder, and the Knights of Ril. All that two generations of Guardians have planned from what their Sight revealed is on the brink of failure. They split their forces to race against time, gambling that thinner numbers will endure on diverging paths toward victory.

Meanwhile, Nathan fights to deal with great loss and a change of course in his life in the Maarihk Empire as it plants new seeds yearning for a single goal: vengeance.

Reviews of Vengeance Borne

• 5/5 Stars — In Vengeance Borne, "some plot lines continue their gradual trajectory, some take a dramatic and heart-wrenching turn, while others escalate, pointing to in-creased conflict and terrible decisions down the road. Natharr, the Guardian of Maarihk, and his friend Ellis the Steel Fist both leave the main group of Rilari warriors on separate missions. Natharr returns to the Ancient Wood for one of the most tense, heartbreaking, and emotionally riveting scenes in the series so far. I was so immersed in what was happening that the physical book completely disappeared. I was there, and I think I stopped breathing. Now that’s some great writing! Both Natharr and Ellis end up encountering new allies to add to their amassing force ... including more women who want to woo Natharr. For some reason, I find most of the women annoying, probably because I’m still committed to Darshelle, his first love. Nathan’s story, which I always find gripping, occupies most of the book’s second half. His identity as the Crown Prince is still a secret from all but Bu, his demon lover. Their relationship is complex, and her hidden motives alone keep me on edge. A dangerous and powerful character from the second book returns to the story and takes command of Nathan’s future, drawing him closer to the evil domain of the Emperor who now rules Maarihk. This book ends dramatically with Natharr again in the Ancient Wood, enduring a test that assures him the allegiance of the Great Beasts. Recommended to readers who love a sweeping story, with marvelous world-building!" — D. Wallace Peach, author of The Shattered Sea Duology
5/5 Stars — "The New Blood Saga delivers an immensely gripping experience, particularly in Vengeance Borne! Seamless pacing and riveting plot development are just a few things to love about this latest instalment. Although it’s very clear at this point, Kilpack is skilled and consistent as a writer. Steeped in epic world-building and memorable characters, the series has me eagerly awaiting the next book!"— Usman, host of Bards and Books YouTube channel (British Columbia, Canada)
5/5 Stars — "I loved it! In Vengeance Borne, the reader is brought right back into the New Blood Saga. If you haven’t read the volumes before it (like I have) I recommend you start with Book 1, Crown Prince, to really relish the entire story. In Book 5 of the New Blood Saga, Kilpack’s descriptive powers are shown in the passages and chapters. It is both gripping and has twists that I did not see coming. The plot is great to follow! In Vengeance Borne, Natharr, Ellis, and Nathan find themselves in circumstances that are leading toward the finale. Natharr’s iron self-control cracks, Ellis must assert his own place as a leader, and Nathan still feels the powerful need of the feed (you’ve got to read the books!). Bottom line, it is a definite attention grabber. It is gripping. It is an incredible story! Again, I urge you to start with Book 1 and work your way up to Book 5. I highly recommend this series! I look forward to Book 6 – Usurper’s Might!"— Jose F. Nodar, author of Books, Pens & Larceny (South Wales, Australia)
5/5 Stars — "W.D. Kilpack III writes an outstanding new volume! In Vengeance Borne, the reader is brought right back into the New Blood Saga. If you haven't read the volumes before it, I recommend that you do. You get a better understanding of the characters, their growth throughout this epic saga, but also who is important, and who may just be in the background, but everyone has their purpose in the story. I am a big fan of this author, and especially this saga. It is a long story with a lot of needed detail and it is full of action, twists and unpredictability. This story is a definite attention grabber, so much I couldn't put it down! It is a gripping and incredible story. It is always an honor to read Kilpack's books. It's a great plot to follow and try to figure out what will happen next. Natharr once again has to save humanity, or at least mankind, as it is dependent on the Guardian. This story brings the past and present to the forefront, and sparks definitely fly! Some are determined to keep their world, while others may be defeated. Vengeance Borne is a definite recommendation!" — Amy's Bookshelf Reviews
